Rule of Thirds

This post should help you understand the rule of thirds: Look at the focal point in this image, the girls face. It is dead center in the image. It makes the composition seem still and somewhat boring:

In this image, the focal point is placed one third from the top and right edge of the image.

This also applies to horizon lines, the boundary between sky and ground (or trees in this case).
